– The 355 workers employed by the NASC in 2017 have called for the payment of their salaries
– According to the report, the workers said they are yet to receive their payment since they were employed
– The public affairs, at the NASC, Janet Mambula, however, said that the workers’ matter is being looked into
Barely four years after their recruitment, some 355 workers employed by the National Assembly Service Commission claimed that they have not been receiving their salaries.
The Punch‘s investigations revealed that many of the affected workers had not received salaries since they were recruited in 2017.
Legit.ng gathered that the commission, sometime in 2017, started the exercise to replace some members of staff who had either retired or left the service, adding that some of those already in the system as legislative aides without letters of appointment also applied.
The newspaper noted that others who also applied were those who did their youth service in the National Assembly, but were still hanging around after the mandatory one year programme, looking for jobs.
According to the report, the affected staff were said to have remained in the system for more than a year until July 2018 when the National Assembly Service Commission gave them fresh letters of appointment.
A senior official of the NASC, who had earlier spoken to the newspaper on condition of anonymity, attributed the delay in the payment of the workers’ salaries to declining revenue.
Speaking on the matter, the director, public affairs, at the NASC, Janet Mambula, on Monday, January 4, said the commission is already looking into it.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the 2021 appropriation bill was passed by the Nigerian Senate months after it was presented to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari.
It was reported that the budget was passed by the upper chamber during a plenary on Monday, December 21, having been read for the third time following weeks of thorough assessment by various committees of the upper legislative chamber.
