After winning it six times, Manchester City have become a permanent owner of an FA Cup trophy as the club owner Sheikh Mansour splashed an outrageous £760,000 (about N400million) to buy the oldest trophy.

Latest reports have it that the City owner secretly purchased the oldest surviving FA Cup trophy from David Gold, the co-owner of West Ham.

It was gathered that Gold opted to sell the silverware last year amid concerns that the trophy which was in use between 1896 and 1910 – could disappear from the UK.

As it is considered as an international and historical jewel, Mansour stepped in to purchase the prize and reports say the club will hand it to the trophy to the National Football Museum indefinitely on loan.

City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said:

“This cup is a visible reminder of the rich and long history of English football to which Manchester City is inextricably entwined.

“Sheik Mansour’s view is that a trophy of such cultural significance must be shared with the people of Manchester and the English football family. The National Football Museum is in a unique position to do that.”
